Redskins Park -- Ashburn,
VA – The Washington Redskins are
up to their oh-so-active ways again. This offseason has been an exciting one
thus far, and the draft is still to come (Where the Redskins currently have 2
first round picks – 2 and 9 Overall).
A major area of need for the Skins has been at Wide
Receiver. For 3 seasons, they have lacked the necessary weapons that could
separate from the widespread (and ever-so-cheesy) man coverage that has taken a
hold on the league. Finally, Owner/GM BigJohnMic has an answer to the Receiver
Riddle by the name of Greg Jennings. Jennings,
a former Cheesehead (Packer) great, was acquired to be Quarterback Ryan
Mallett’s Go-To guy. His outstanding attributes and track record show he is
able to get open and hang on to the ball when thrown anywhere in his direction.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, much lesser known, but
highly coveted targets TE Bryan Zabal and WR Duran Tyson (yes, the lovechild of
Boxing greats Roberto Duran and Mike Tyson) were acquired in a deal with the
Atlanta Falcons. Zabal, entering his second season, gives the Redskins a
tremendous threat at the Tight End position. Outside of his low awareness of the game,
Tyson has all of the tools to become a fantastic Wide Receiver. His 6’4” frame
and lightning speed coupled with his ability to catch the ball could make him a
threat to start immediately.
Conversely, on the other side of the ball, rising star
Cornerback Josh Ramos had a fantastic season for the Redskins. However, it was
a revolving door as to who started opposite of him. That will no longer be the
case, as the Skins have acquired 2nd year Corner Larry Hampton in a
trade with the Chicago Bears. Hampton, who excels in everything but Zone
Coverage, should be the answer to the void opposite Ramos.
With the draft merely hours away, the Redskins are looking
to strike gold with their first round picks. There are no real “needs” to fill
at this time. However, depth is a concern at many positions, and BigJohnMic has
seriously considered moving the ninth overall pick for the right deal. All in
all, the Skins are certainly going for a division crown this season, with hopes
of reaching the playoffs for the first time in Madden 13.
