Redskins First Quarter Report Empty Redskins First Quarter Report

    Rookies, Free Agents, and Re-Signings:

Rookie CB Josh Ramos (1st Round), WR Foloi Jones (3rd Round), and DE Villami Smith (5th Round) have both found their way into the starting lineup and have performed admirably. Free agent acquisitions have also proved their worth for the Redskins. C Todd McClure has become a true leader for an offensive line that lacked identity. Newly signed MLB E.J. Henderson has decently filled the gap left by the retired (and beloved) London Fletcher. FS Ahmad Black, Nickel back Johnny Patrick, and Cornerback Bruce Johnson have all upgraded the overall skill and depth in the secondary; each player has recorded at least one interception this season. Black has solidified what was an unstable spot for the Skins D.

The Redskins have also come to terms on long term deals with SS T.J. Ward and OLB Brian Orakpo. It is unknown whether the front office is willing to pay the 30 year old starting CB Josh Wilson. However, multiple reports have cited that the Skins are willing to let then aging CB hit the FA market if he doesn't lower his demands.

    On The Field:

The aforementioned Ramos has become an impact player right off the bat, leading the team with 4 interceptions in his first 4 games. The newly acquired OLB James Harrison has been an upgrading over Ryan Kerrigan. Harrison is averaging one sack per game, and has been a terror coming off the edge with Orakpo (5 sacks) doing work on the opposite side.

Offensively, the team has yet to find a rhythm. However, RB Trent Richardson has done a fabulous job toting the rock in the few opportunities (53 attempts in 4 games) he's had. If the team wants to move forward, Richardson must become the focal point of the offense. In the same vein, QB Robert Griffin III has struggled in his sophomore season (4 TDs, 6 Ints). RG3 decision making has come into question, as well as the quality of WRs. Pierre Garcon has struggled mightily to separate from corners, and has been relegated to the Slot Receiver role. Rookie Foloi Jones, 2nd year WR Leonard Hankerson and star Tight End Fred Davis will be relied upon to shoulder the receiving load.

    Overview:

With two quality wins (@ NYJ and v. PHI) and two close losses (3 pts @ BUF and 9 pts v. ARI), Washington is still in position to improve upon last year's disappointing season. The keys will be to tighten up their coverage in the secondary, run the ball consistently, and stay ahead of the chains to put RG3 in a position to succeed on 3rd down. RG3's efficiency will depend heavily on the running game's success (or lack thereof).
